ESP

BARCA-Leeds Educational Support Programme (ESP) is an Approved Provider for Leeds City Council. ESP is designed for students in years 9-11 for whom the school environment has been difficult to manage.

The ultimate aim of the programme it to re-direct young people back into learning and self-development. Each young person is given a personal development plan. His/ her needs are recognised and reviewed periodically throughout the term.

The programme takes into account the student’s needs and changing conditions, it is flexible and responsive which in turn motivates the young people, we believe that with this approach young people are more likely to respond.

BARCA offers this range of accredited courses:

  • OCN Step Up Award
  • OCN Step Up Certificate
  • ASDAN Wider Key Skills
  • The Princes Trust XL Award

Initial and Diagnostic testing in Maths, English and ICT are carried out when a learner starts the programme. Skills checks are carried out throughout the academic year.

Subjects

We offer the following topics:

  • English – Literacy support
  • Maths – Numeracy support
  • ICT
  • Sport
  • Outdoor Education

Short courses covering a range of life skills will be run during the year. Learners can undertake a flexible programme to a maximum of 4 days per week, for a term or a full year.

Outdoor education is used as a way to take the young people out of their comfort zone and challenge them with activities to increase confidence, increase self-esteem, improve group participation and team work skills. Young people experience opportunities such as canoeing, climbing, caving, orienteering, mountain biking and gorge walking on the ESP programme alongside more conventional learning.

ESP has recieved funding from the North Face Explore Fund for equipment for ESP. The North Face Explore Fund breaks down the barriers from preventing children and families from engaging in the great outdoors.

Moving on

Our Connexions Personal Advisers will help Year 11′s to explore options available, make applications for college or employment and prepare for interviews.

Programme Ethos

We start from the belief that everyone can achieve regardless of previous experience. We have specialist workers to support learners with literacy, numeracy and behaviour needs.

Learners will have the opportunity to develop their communication, teamwork and co-operation skills and challenge themselves through out Outdoor Education Programme and/ or The Princes Trust XL Programme.

Learners will be encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and behaviour in a supportive environment. Believe you can achieve.

Our programme is supported by a range of policies with the aim of safeguarding all our learners and staff.

All of our courses are charged at £30 per day for this year. There are additional charges for lunch which we provide for all learners, and accreditation registration and certification costs, which are invoiced throughout the year.
